August 31, 1777 - The Elk Neck Dispatch

Claims Must Be Filed

Claims of losses must be filed at the Office of the Commissary, Head of Elk, before September 17, 1777. To date, the only claim on file has been placed by Captain John Ford from Old Field Point, whose house was used as the headquarters of the Hessian General Knyphausen on August 25 and 26, 1777. An inventory of his loss includes three horses, four cows, twenty-eight sheep, thirteen large hogs, thirty-six geese, one-hundred bushels of corn, eight barrels of herring, one dozen shad and a pound of salt.

Many families report that pots of soap, horse shoes, single trees, wagons, cart wheels, blankets, barrels of fish, bags of salt, water buckets, kegs of meal, geese, chickens, ducks as well as horses and cows are missing.
