First Annual Pencader Heritage Area Association Student Leadership Seminar

This is the latest educational initiative on the part of Pencader Heritage Area Association, as we continue our goal of providing service to the greater Pencader Hundred community. The December 13, 2007 seminar was attended by 24 school-identified student leaders and educators from Glasgow High and Pencader High. Representing the staff was Ltc John Huber, Lindsay Baker, and David Jones. The PHAA seminar coordinator was former Christina School District teacher/administrator, Bill Conley. The goal of the seminar was to expose high school students to the success stories of proven Delaware leaders. The welcoming speaker was NCC Councilman David Tackett, who represents the 11th district. Mr Tackett reviewed the role of County government and gave examples of the leadership expected of each Council member. Lt Jamie Wolhar, of the Delaware Army National Guard, showed a power point presentation of essential leadership characteristics that are found in history. He was assisted by NCO's from the Delaware Guard Recruiting Command. Judge Richard Cooch, of the Delaware Superior Court, was the keynote speaker. He reviewed both the role of the Superior Court and provided examples of the types of decisions that judicial leaders are called upon to make. Mr Robin Billings, of the Delmarva Boy Scouts, provided information on the role scouting plays in the development of new student leaders. He shared with the students the background of a new "Venture" Co-ed Scouting unit that provides unlimited opportunities for student leadership experiences. Pencader Heritage Area Association hopes to support this new Venture Unit that focuses on historical interpretation and reenactment.
