Chesapeake and Delaware Canal

This early 1800s above-grade canal connects the Delaware River with the Chesapeake Bay. Originally it was a modest above-grade, hand-dug ditch with navigation locks at each end. A supplemental pumping station was used to re-supply water to the canal. The structure was among the most expensive to build among a number of regional canals, but remains the most successful, even today, on a world-wide basis. Knowledgeable staff can discuss.
