Battlefield of Cooch’s Bridge The Battle of Cooch’s Bridge, September 7, 1777, was the only Delaware engagement of the Revolutionary War. An American military assemblage of perhaps a thousand men engaged approximately four thousand British soldiers in the area of Cooch’s Bridge on the Christina River and Old Baltimore Pike. This was a delaying action to give General Washington and his main army more time to withdraw up into Pennsylvania and successfully delayed the British by an additional three days. About 40 soldiers were lost on each side and many may be buried in unmarked sites in the region. The allegation persists that the brand new American flag developed by Betsy Ross was first flown in battle at this Battle of Cooch’s Bridge. This is a classroom presentation including a briefing and display of the authentic Revolutionary War artifacts in the Museum. An optional driving tour of limited areas of the battlefield is possible with a PHAA staff guide, preferably with requesting party supplied transportation
